Timex Cycle Trainer 2.0 GPS Bike Computer

The new Timex Cycle Trainer 2.0 GPS bike computer brings Timex quality to the cycling community with a unit that will rival the Garmin Edge 500. In fact, the unit is darn near the same dimension as the Edge 500 and specifies many of the same features. The unit is now in stock and available to order..

We previewed a unit in September 2011 just following Inter-bike. What stood out right away was the mounting system which can be unsnapped and then turned in either direction for both stem and handlebar mounting with ease. The unit uses SIRF III GPS chip set technology is ANT+ compatible, has a barometric altimeter, works with a PC or Mac and appears to have a lot of the right features going for it right out of the gate.

The Timex Road Trainer RT3 is cadence compatible but the unit itself will come in a box with just the mounting hardware and the Flex Tech digital chest strap. The cadence sensor needs to be purchased separately for about $59. Even so, the base unit price at $250 with the cadence added in comes in at about $40 less than the Garmin Edge 500 unit for a very comparably featured device.

A year ago we would not have predicted that Timex would have bridged the gap to Garmin's GPS technology within a year, but thanks to the introduction of the new Timex Road Trainer and the new Timex Road Trainer RT3 GPS bike computer it brings Timex very close to knocking on Garmin's door.
