Edge 800

The new Edge 800 will be the first ever touchscreen display GPS bike computer. The Garmin Edge 800 supplies simultaneously navigation and performance monitoring and is ideal for touring, bike commuters, bike racing and off-road riding on the single track. It has an installed base map and displays your current distance, tempo, location and total ascent and descent. Utilize it along with a heart rate monitor strap, compatible cadence sensing unit or any ANT watts meter to really optimize your own exercise program on your bike computer.

Control In Your Fingertips

The touchscreen display on the Edge is actually rugged enough to stand up to nasty weather conditions, but hypersensitive enough to react with the touch of one's gloved hand. Switch workout pages or pan and zoom the map with simply a gentle tap. This vivid, sunlight-legible full color display is straightforward to see in all of the lighting conditions. Just don't let the visual appearance deceive you as Garmin Edge 800 is waterproof to IPX7 requirements and can also hold up against tough knocks and scrapes it could endure in single track biking conditions.

Garmin Edge 800 features a built-in base map which displays main roads and metropolitan areas, additionally it's actually compatible with our microSD cards loaded with a choice between street or topographic routes. Pick a destination and Edge 800 cycling computer offers turn-by-turn instructions on the display screen. This GPS bike computer can point you around routes taken by various other bike riders.

Discover our Garmin Connect site and select from an incredible number of rides published by other users. Virtually any routines you add to your Edge 800 cycling computer are stored as routes. You are able to trace the course with navigation prompts or perhaps, for some competition, race it and then try to exceed previously set goals. You can even use Garmin's free BaseCamp software or additional functions to produce a route, view elevation variations and other information, and publish to Edge 800.

This particular bike computer records every single move with a super sensitive GPS receiver that remains locked on, including beneath tree canopies. The receiver offers Hot Fix satellite prediction to compute your position faster, and it also has intelligent time zone change.

Data, Any Way You Need It

The Edge 800 cycling computer tracks tons of details regarding your pedal and allows you to tailor-make up to three training pages so you can see as much or as little information as you wish. The altimeter offers very precise climbing and descending information and records temperature changes.

If you're a performance cyclist, you can pair the bike computer using a third-party ANT power meter to display your energy output in watts in real-time. This enlightening information demonstrates how intensely you happen to be performing, irrespective of circumstances impacting your training, so you can workout better. Certain variations of this cycling computer additionally have a pedal cadence sensor and heart rate monitor.

Exact Pacing Applications

OUR EDGE 800 EXPERIENCE

There is a learning curve to this bike computer known as the Edge 800 but if you put in a little time it will re-pay you in spades with an endless array of metrics and data that is unsurpassed.

Installation is pretty darn easy with the stretch rubber O-rings that Garmin provides for the Edge unit and we really like the fact that you don't have to cut the mount off like you do with zip ties. No more carbon stem damage.

Installing the cadence sensor is pretty easy on the Edge. Just peel back the tape on the rubber mount and stick it to the bottom of the cadence unit and place it on the left rear chain stay tube opposite the drive system. Bring your left crank arm parallel to the tube and mount the magnet around the crank arm up high and close to the pedal. Thread the zip ties through the channels in the cadence unit and cinch them down.

Remember, you don't need to install the spoke magnet because the Edge 800 picks up all of the speed via GPS. This means you can keep the little retractable arm folded down. The side with the screw top for the battery can be pointed inward toward the spokes while the flat side with the cadence sensing unit can be faced outward toward the crank arm magnet.

Cadence is a very useful measure in cycling. It is precisely what Chris Carmichael worked on with Lance Armstrong when he came back from cancer to win 7 Tour De France's. They worked on elevating pedal cadence, especially when climbing and anaerobic threshold. More on this later and how you can use your Edge to determine your anaerobic threshold, or any bike computer equipped with a heart rate monitor.

Don't set up too many metrics with alarms. In other words if you set up heart rate alerts, cadence alerts and speed alerts the damn thing is going to be beeping at you all the time and it can get pretty annoying. After 8 rides or so with my Edge I decided that I would only use heart rate alerts and skip everything else but I do keep an eye on my cadence, percentage grade and other factors.

I love percentage grade because for a given gradient I can figure out which gearing allows me to keep an 80 rpm pedal cadence and the Edge 800 is a big help with that. If I am on an 8% grade than a 44-21 allows me to do this. Knowing you gearing to grade is helpful although as we all know, environmental factors (say headwind) can blow your formula. This is precisely why so many cyclists have turned to watts as the metric of choice because it shows constant output minus the external factor noise.

Garmin is going to be coming out with a slick watts meter that is built into pedals. Word on the street is that it will be out later in 2011. It will allow you to get real-time watts output on your Edge 800, or Edge 500, and the pedal units can easily be transferred from bike to bike. Initial cost guesstimates are about $2,000, but unlike many other power meters it will measure more than just raw power, it will actually measure where the power is and is not in the pedal stroke. This could be enormously useful for improving where the power is and how to improve it.

All in all our experience with the Edge 800 unit has been phenomenal and the mapping, even with just the basic maps and no card, is amazing. You always know what roads are coming up. Our absolute favorite application though is the topographic card. This is so awesome for mountain biking that it defies description. To be able to map all your trails and see all your climbs and descents is pretty darn cool.

Using the Garmin Connect software is pretty trick too. What we really like is how it shoots elevation profiles. You can drop and drag an icon to the top of a climb, freeze it and voila you have your corresponding heart rate. Drag it just beyond the top to see how you recovered. It is a pretty trick system.

Overall our Edge 800 impressions are very favorable. We are sponsoring a bike team and several of the members are using these units so we'll get back to you with more impressions as the year unfolds.
